| glutamine | <amino acid> One of the 20 amino acids commonly found (and directly coded for) in proteins. It is the amide at the _ carboxyl of the amino acid glutamate. Glutamine can participate in covalent cross linking reactions between proteins, by forming peptide like bonds by a transamidation reaction with lysine residues. This reaction, catalysed by clotting factor XIII stabilises the aggregates of fibrin formed during blood clotting. Media for culture of animal cells contain some 10 times more glutamine than other amino acids, the excess presumably acting as a carbon source. (18 Nov 1997) |

Chemical name: L-Glutamine:D-fructose-6-phosphate aminotransferase (hexose-isomerizing) Registry number: EC 2.6.1.16 (12 Dec 1998) |
| glutamine-pyruvate aminotransferase | <enzyme> Consider also glutamine transaminase k if cysteine conjugate beta-lyase activity is also present; l-methionine can act as donor; glyoxylate can act as acceptor Registry number: EC 2.6.1.15 Synonym: glutamine alpha-ketoacid transaminase, glutamine transaminase, glutamine transaminase l, glutamine oxo-acid aminotransferase, glutaminase II, glutamine aminotransferase, l-methionine aminotransferase (26 Jun 1999) |

| protein-glutamine gamma-glutamyltransferase | <enzyme> An enzyme that catalyses the reaction of protein glutamine and an alkylamine to yield protein n(5)-alkylglutamine and ammonia. The gamma-carboxamide groups of peptide-bound glutamine residues act as acyl donors, and the 6-amino groups of protein- and peptide-bound lysine residues act as acceptors, to give intra- and inter-molecular n(6)-(5-glutamyl)lysine crosslinks. In the epidermis these cross-linked proteins are involved in the formation of the cornified envelope of the stratum corneum cells. In the plasma, the transglutaminase is called factor xiiia, the activated form of factor xiii. The crosslinking results in the stabilization of the fibrin clot. Pharmacological action: coagulants. A non-essential amino acid, glutamine is considered to be a brain fuel. Glutamine has been used therapeutically for alcoholism, mild depression and to reduce the craving for sweets. Glutamine is very important in the functioning of the metabolism and muscle maintenance. Glutamine supplementation can help prevent muscle and other tissue breakdown by providing the body with nitrogen and fuel.
