| gentamicin | <drug> A group of aminoglycoside antibiotics produced by Micromonospora spp. Members include the closely related gentamicin compounds C1, C2 and C1a, together with gentamicin A. They inhibit protein synthesis on 70S ribosomes by binding to the 23S core protein of the small subunit, that is responsible for binding mRNA. Mode of action similar to that of kanamycin, neomycin, paromomycin, spectinomycin and streptomycin. Active against strains of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. (18 Nov 1997) |

| gentamicin 2'-N-acetyltransferase | <enzyme> An aminoglycoside acetyltransferase; isolated from providencia stuartii; genbank l06156 Registry number: EC 2.3.1.59 Synonym: aac(2')-ia, 2'-n-acetyltransferase, providencia stuartii (26 Jun 1999) |
| gentamicin 2''-nucleotidyltransferase | <enzyme> Chemical name: aminoglycoside 2''-adenylyltransferase Registry number: EC 2.7.7.46 Synonym: gentamycin adenylase, gentamycin adenylyltransferase, aminoglycoside adenylyltransferase, aminoglycoside 2''-o-nucleotidyltransferase, 2''-o-adenylyltransferase, aada2 gene product (26 Jun 1999) |
| sisomicin-gentamicin resistance ribosomal RNA methylase | <enzyme> Catalyses the methylation of 30s ribosomal units to confer sisomicin-gentamicin resistance in micromonospora zionensis Registry number: EC 2.1.1.- Synonym: sgm gene product, sgm methylase (26 Jun 1999) |
| saline | Salty, of the nature of a salt, containing a salt or salts. Origin: L. Salinus, sal = salt (18 Nov 1997) |
| saline agglutinin | An antibody which causes agglutination of erythrocytes when they are suspended either in saline or in a protein medium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| saline conditions | Soils or waters that are high in salt content, that is, more than 0.5 parts per thousand (=0.05% salinity). Usually sodium chloride (NaCl) is the predominant salt, but some areas have high concentrations of sulphates, carbonates, and bicarbonates, as well. Habitats are commonly subdivided on the basis of total salt content. (09 Oct 1997) |
| saline solution | A solution of any salt. Synonym: salt solution. Specifically, an isotonic sodium chloride solution.; 0.85 to 0.9/100 ml water. (05 Mar 2000) |
| saline solution, hypertonic | Hypertonic sodium chloride solution. A solution having an osmotic pressure greater than that of physiologic salt solution (0.9 g nacl in 100 ml purified water). (12 Dec 1998) |
| saline water | A water that contains neutral salts (chlorides, bromides, iodides, sulfates) in appreciable amounts. (05 Mar 2000) |
| formol-saline fixative | A general fixative for histologic and histochemical preparations. (05 Mar 2000) |
| beta-normal | <radiobiology> Beta-N, the normalised beta, is beta relative to the beta limit. (09 Oct 1997) |
| big axillary nodes and normal breasts | <radiology> Consider: lymphoma, leukaemia, rheumatoid arthritis (12 Dec 1998) |
| gallium uptake with normal chest film | <radiology> Pulmonary drug toxicity, tumour infiltration, sarcoidosis, pneumocystis carinii see: lung: gallium imaging (12 Dec 1998) |
| range, normal | Normal results can fall outside the normal range. By convention, the normal range is set to cover ninety-five percent (95%) of values from a normal population. Five percent (5%) of normal results therefore fall outside the normal range. (12 Dec 1998) |
