설명   
  위와 큰창자 사이의 길이 5m내외의 소화기관으로서 샘창자, 빈창자, 돌창자의 세 부분으로 구성됨.
  
  1)샘창자: 소장의 제일 첫부분으로서 길이 25cm의 C자형모양. 상부, 내림, 가로, 오름의 네부위로 구성되며, 상부 부위를 제외하고는 모두 뒤복벽에 고정되어 있으며 내부에는 돌림주름이라는 점막 주름이 존재함. 위에서 넘어온 소화된 음식이 담즙, 이자액에서 분비되는 소화효소액)과 섞이는 장소이며 철이 흡수되는 장소임.
  
  2)빈창자:작은창자의 두번째 부분으로서 근위부 2/5를 차지함. 공장은 회장에 비해 직경이 크고 장벽이 두꺼우며 혈관이 풍부하고 장간막이 투명하고 직행혈관이 긴 것이 특징임.
  
  3)돌창자:작은창자의 마지막 부분으로서 원위부 3/5을 차지함. 특히 돌창자, 큰창자 이행부 부위에는 파이어판이라는 림프절이 존재하며, 이곳은 각종 질병의 중요한 발생 부위가 됨. 담즙염 및 비타민 B12가 흡수되는 장소임.

설명   
  방사선 조영제(방사선검사에서 다른 부위와 대조되는 아주 흰색을 띠는 물질)인 바륨을 섭취한 뒤, 촬영하는 작은창자의 기본적인 방사선 검사로서, 방법은 200~300mL의 바륨을 먹은뒤 바륨이 작은 창자를 통과하는 동안 정규적 간격으로 방사선 사진을 찍음. 일반적으로 2~3시간이 걸림.

    동의어=intestinum tenue. 1. 위와 대장 사이에 있는 길이 6∼7 m에 이르는 소화관. 위액에 의해 암죽처럼 된 음식물은 소장을 통과하는 사이에 소장벽에서 분비되는 장액, 간에서 만들어지는 쓸개즙, 이자에서 나오는 이자액 등과 혼합된다. 소장은 소화 운동을 하면서 영양분을 소화, 흡수하는 중요한 부분이다. 소장은 위에서부터 십이지장, 공장, 회장의 세 부분으로 구분한다. 공장과 회장의 길이의 비는 약 2:3 정도이며, 십이지장은 후복벽에 튼튼하게 고정되어 있으나, 공장과 회장은 복강 속에 길게 퍼져서 장간막에 의하여 복벽에 연결되어 있다. 그런데다 장간막의 길이가 15∼25 cm나 되므로, 공장과 회장은 가동성이 크다. 공장과 회장을 합쳐서 유장간막 소장이라고 한다. 공장은 회장보다 약간 굵고 벽이 두꺼우며, 혈관의 분포도 공장에 많다. 시체를 해부했을 경우, 공장은 내용물이 비어 있는 경우가 많고, 회장은 복강 속에서 꾸불꾸불하게 되어 있기 때문에 이와 같이 명명되었다. 소장 내면의 점막에는 윤상으로 뻗어있는 수많은 주름이 있고, 주름의 표면에는 융모라고 하는 길이 0.5∼1 mm되는 점막 돌기가 빽빽하게 돋아 있다. 융모 사이로 점막 조직에 들어 있는 장선이 열려 있어 장액을 이 곳으로 분비한다. 윤상의 주름은 십이지장과 공장에는 많으나 회장에는 적다. 소장 점막에는 특수한 림프 조직이 발달해 있는데 이것에는 두 종류가 있다. 하나는 점막면에 지름 1∼1.5 mm이고 흰색을 띤 돌출물처럼 보이는 고립 림프 소절로서, 이 림프 소절은 장 전체에 퍼져 있다. 다른 하나는 집합 림프 소절로 이것은 고립 림프 소절이 밀집한 것으로, 지름 2∼10 cm인 긴장 타원형을 이루고 있으며 소절의 장축은 장의 긴축 방향과 일치하고 있는데, 그 수는 약 15∼30개 정도이다. 장 결핵이나 장티푸스 등에 걸리면 이 부분에서 궤양이 생긴다. 소장의 기능에는 운동 기능, 분비 기능, 흡수 기능의 세 가지가 있다. 2. 유문 아래에서 맹장 전에 이르는 5-6m 길이의 소화관으로 십이지장, 공장, 회장의 3부분으로 구성되어 있고, 소화된 영양분을 흡수 혈류나 림프관으로 운반하는 역할을 한다.

10. That dimension of the body of a type called by printers the width. Dead set. The act of a setter dog when it discovers the game, and remains intently fixed in pointing it out. A fixed or stationary condition arising from obstacle or hindrance; a deadlock; as, to be at a dead set. A concerted scheme to defraud by gaming; a determined onset. To make a dead set, to make a determined onset, literally or figuratively.

set-off 1. That which is set off against another thing; an offset. "I do not contemplate such a heroine as a set-off to the many sins imputed to me as committed against woman." (D. Jerrold)
2. That which is used to improve the appearance of anything; a decoration; an ornament.
3. A counterclaim; a cross debt or demand; a distinct claim filed or set up by the defendant against the plaintiff's demand.
Set-off differs from recoupment, as the latter generally grows out of the same matter or contract with the plaintiff's claim, while the former grows out of distinct matter, and does not of itself deny the justice of the plaintiff's demand. Offset is sometimes improperly used for the legal term set-off. See Recoupment.
