| Democritus of Abdera |
a Greek philosopher, c. 460c. 370 B.C., who was the first to state that everything in nature, including the body and the soul, is made up of atoms of different sizes and shapes, the movements of which are the cause of life and mental activity. Democritus' only influential Greek follower was Epicurus (341270 B.C.). Their mechanistic, atomistic theory was influential at Alexandria, and the Epicurean school of philosophy corresponds roughly to the Empiric school of medicine. See also Asclepiades of Bithynia.
