antirachitic vitamins Ergocalciferol (v. D2) and cholecalciferol (v. D3).
(05 Mar 2000)
vitamins For the various vitamins see Vitamins. The word vitamin was coined in 1911 by the warsaw-born biochemist casimir funk (1884-1967). at the lister institute in london, funk isolated a substance that prevented nerve inflammation (neuritis) in chickens raised on a diet deficient in that substance. He named the substance vitamine because he believed it was necessary to life and it was a chemical amine. The e at the end was later removed when it was recognised that vitamins need not be amines. The letters (a, b, c and so on) were assigned to the vitamins in the order of their discovery. The one exception was vitamin k which was assigned its k from koagulation by the danish researcher henrik dam.
(12 Dec 1998)
fat-soluble vitamins Those vitamin's, soluble in fat solvents (nonpolar solvents) and relatively insoluble in water, marked in chemical structure by the presence of large hydrocarbon moieties in the molecule; e.g., vitamin's A, D, E, K.
(05 Mar 2000)
acceptable daily intake <pharmacology> This is an estimate of the amount of a substance in food that can be ingested daily over a lifetime by humans without appreciable health risk.
The concept of the acceptable daily intake has been developed principally by who and FAO and is relevant to chemicals such as additives to foods, residues of pesticides and veterinary drugs in foods.
Acceptable daily intakes are derived from laboratory toxicity data, and from human experiences of such chemicals when this is available, and incorporate a safety factor. The acceptable daily intake is thus an estimate of the amount of a substance in food that can be ingested over a lifetime by humans without significant risk to health (for contaminants in food and drinking water, tolerable intakes - daily or weekly - are used).
See: tolerable daily intake.
(15 Jan 1998)
activities of daily living The things we normally do in daily living including any daily activity we perform for self-care (such as feeding ourselves, bathing, dressing, grooming), work, homemaking, and leisure. The ability or inability to perform ADLs can be used as a very practical measure of ability/disability in many disorders.
(12 Dec 1998)
activities of daily living scale A scale to score physical activity and its limitations, based on answers to simple questions about mobility, self-care, grooming, etc; widely used in geriatrics, rheumatology, etc.
(05 Mar 2000)
daily dose The total amount of a remedy that is to be taken within 24 hours.
(05 Mar 2000)
tolerable daily intake TDIs are applied to chemical contaminants in food and drinking water. The presence of contaminants is unwanted and they have no useful function, differing from additives and residues where there is or was deliberate use resulting in their presence. TDIs are calculated on the basis of laboratory toxicity data with the application of uncertainty factors. A TDI is therefore an estimate of the amount of a substance (contaminant) in food or drinking water that can be ingested daily over a lifetime without a significant health risk.
(09 Oct 1997)
albuminised iron Iron albuminate, a compound of iron oxide and albumin; rendered soluble by the presence of sodium citrate; occurs as reddish brown, lustrous granules, odourless or nearly so; used in anaemia.
(05 Mar 2000)
anaemia, iron deficiency Deficiency of iron results in anaemia because iron is necessary to make haemoglobin, the key molecule in red blood cells responsible for the transport of oxygen. In iron deficiency anaemia, the red cells are unusally small (microcytic) and pale (hypochromic). Characteristic features of iron deficiency anaemia in children include failure to thrive (grow) and increased infections. The treatment of iron deficiency anaemia, whether it be in children or adults, is with iron and iron-containing foods. Food sources of iron include meat, poultry, eggs, vegetables and cereals (especially those fortified with iron). According to the National Academy of Sciences, the Recommended Dietary Allowances of iron are 15 milligrams per day for women and 10 milligrams per day for men.
Anaemia characterised by low or absent iron stores, low serum iron concentration, elevated free erythrocyte porphorin, low transferrin saturation, elevated transferrin, low serum ferritin, low haemoglobin concentration or haematocrit, and hypochromic microcytic red blood cells. Symptoms may include pallor, angular stomatitis and other oral lesions, gastrointestinal complaints, retinal haemorrhages and exudates, and thinning and brittleness of the nails. Among the causes of iron-deficiency anaemia are inadequate iron intake, impaired iron absorption, increased blood loss and increased requirements such as infancy, pregnancy, and lactation.
