| cryptosporidium | A small intestinal parasite which commonly causes infection in only the immunocompromised host, such as the patient with AIDS. Symptoms of Cryptosporidium enterocolitis include watery diarrhoea, abdominal pain, flatulence and fever. Transmission is from faeces to mouth and from tainted water.
