| crepitant | 1. Relating to or characterised by crepitation. 2. Denoting a fine bubbling noise (rale) produced by air entering fluid in lung tissue; heard in pneumonia and in certain other conditions. 3. The sensation imparted to the palpating finger by gas or air in the subcutaneous tissues. (05 Mar 2000) |
| crepitant rale | A fine bubbling or crackling sound produced by air mixing with very thin secretions in the smaller bronchial tubes. Synonym: vesicular rale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hand-and-foot syndrome | <syndrome> Recurrent painful swelling of the hands and feet occurring in infants and young children with sickle cell anaemia. Synonym: sickle cell dactylitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hand-foot-and-mouth disease | <infectious disease> Hand, foot and mouth disease is a mild, highly infectious viral disease of children, characterised by vesicular lesions in the mouth and on the hands and feet. Occurs most often in young children (under 3) and is transmitted via close contact. Outbreaks occur most often in the spring. Usually begins as a throat infection (pharyngitis) that later includes a rash (blisters) on the hands, feet and diaper area. Blisters may also appear on the throat and in the mouth. Other features include anorexia, headache and fever. The illness is typically self-limited, lasting 5-7 days. There is no specific treatment other than general supportive care. An exanthematous eruption of small, pearl-gray vesicles of the fingers, toes, palms, and soles, accompanied by often painful vesicles and ulceration of the buccal mucous membrane and the tongue and by slight fever; the disease lasts 4 to 7 days, and is usually caused by Coxsackie virus type A-16, but other types have been identified. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hand-foot-and-mouth disease virus | The virus causing hand-foot-and-mouth disease; chiefly type A16 but also types A4, A5, A7, A9, or A10 Entervirus coxsackievirus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bursal synovitis | <pathology> Inflammation of a bursa, occasionally accompanied by a calcific deposit in the underlying supraspinatus tendon, the most common site is the subdeltoid bursa. (18 Nov 1997) |
| vaginal synovitis | <pathology> Inflammation of a tendon sheath. (18 Nov 1997) |
| pigmented villonodular synovitis | <radiology> Monoarthritis, young adults, erosions on BOTH sides of joint (!), probably inflammatory, haemosiderin deposited in synovium, articular cartilage preserved (despite extensive marginal erosions; similar to gout), NO calcification Differential diagnosis: TB (associated atrophy of muscle and bone), rheumatoid arthritis (symmetrical), synovial sarcoma (with or without calcified; outside joint), synovial osteochondromatosis (12 Dec 1998) |
| purulent synovitis | Acute inflammation of synovial membranes, with purulent effusion into a joint, due to bacterial infection; the usual route of infection is hemic to the synovial tissue, causing destruction of the articular cartilage, and may become chronic, with sinus formation, osteomyelitis, deformity, and disability. Synonym: purulent synovitis, pyarthrosis, pyogenic arthritis, suppurative synovitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| serous synovitis | Synovitis with a large effusion of nonpurulent fluid. (05 Mar 2000) |
| suppurative synovitis | Acute inflammation of synovial membranes, with purulent effusion into a joint, due to bacterial infection; the usual route of infection is hemic to the synovial tissue, causing destruction of the articular cartilage, and may become chronic, with sinus formation, osteomyelitis, deformity, and disability. Synonym: purulent synovitis, pyarthrosis, pyogenic arthritis, suppurative synovitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| synovitis | <orthopaedics, rheumatology> Inflammation of a synovial membrane. It is usually painful, particularly on motion and is characterised by a fluctuating swelling due to effusion within a synovial sac. Synovitis is qualified as fibrinous, gonorrhoeal, hyperplastic, lipomatous, metritic, puerperal, rheumatic, scarlatinal, syphilitic, tuberculous, urethral, etc. (18 Nov 1997) |
| synovitis, pigmented villonodular | Outgrowths of synovial membrane composed of villi and fibrous nodules characterised histologically by haemosiderin- and lipid-containing macrophages and multinucleated giant cells. It usually occurs in the knee. (12 Dec 1998) |
| synovitis sicca | Synovitis with little serous or purulent effusion. Synonym: synovitis sicca. (05 Mar 2000) |
