| carcinoma, infiltrating duct | An invasive (infiltrating) carcinoma of the breast. This carcinoma in which no special histological feature is recognised is designated nos or not otherwise specified and is by far the most common ductal tumour, accounting for almost 70% of breast cancers. It is characterised by stony hardness upon palpation. It commonly metastasizes to the axillary lymph nodes and its prognosis is the poorest of the various ductal types. (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| infiltrating ductal cell carcinoma | <oncology, tumour> A cancer that begins in the mammary glands and has spread to areas outside the gland. (13 Nov 1997) |
| carcinoma, lobular | A infiltrating (invasive) breast cancer, relatively uncommon, accounting for only 5%-10% of breast tumours in most series. It is often an area of ill-defined thickening in the breast, in contrast to the dominant lump characteristic of ductal carcinoma. It is typically composed of small cells in a linear arrangement with a tendency to grow around ducts and lobules. There is likelihood of axillary nodal involvement with metastasis to meningeal and serosal surfaces. (12 Dec 1998) |
| noninfiltrating lobular carcinoma | <tumour> Carcinoma of the breast in which small tumour cells fill preexisting acini within lobules, without invading the surrounding stroma. Synonym: lobular carcinoma in situ, lobular neoplasia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lobular carcinoma | <tumour> A form of adenocarcinoma, especially of the breast, where lobular carcinoma is less common than ductal carcinoma and usually is composed of small cells. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lobular carcinoma in situ | <tumour> Carcinoma of the breast in which small tumour cells fill preexisting acini within lobules, without invading the surrounding stroma. Synonym: lobular carcinoma in situ, lobular neoplasia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| breast carcinoma | <oncology> The uncontrolled growth of malignant breast tissue. Breast cancer is currently the most common cancer in women and the leading cause of cancer-related death in the 15-54 age group. Strong risk factors include a prior history for breast cancer or a positive family history for breast cancer. Early detection is possible through the use of monthly breast self-examination, annual clinical exams and mammography. | infiltrating | <pathology> Refers to a tumour that penetrates the normal, surrounding tissue. (13 Nov 1997) |
| infiltrating cancer | <oncology> Cancer that has grown through the cell wall of the breast area, in which it originated, and into surrounding tissues. (13 Nov 1997) |
| infiltrating lipoma | A malignant tumour derived from primitive or embryonal lipoblastic cells. It may be composed of well-differentiated fat cells or may be dedifferentiated: myxoid (liposarcoma, myxoid), round-celled, or pleomorphic, usually in association with a rich network of capillaries. Recurrences are common and dedifferentiated liposarcomas metastasize to the lungs or serosal surfaces. (12 Dec 1998) |
| tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte | <haematology, oncology> Special cancer-fighting cells of the immune system found in tumours. In a type of experimental therapy, scientists harvest these cells from the tumour, grow them in a laboratory and then return them to the patient with the hope of the cells destroying the tumour. These cells can be collected from the site of a tumour and exposed to IL-2 in vitro. When these cells are injected back into the tumour bearing host, they will specifically kill the tumour from which they originated. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lymphocytes, tumour-infiltrating | Lymphocytes that show specificity for autologous tumour cells. Ex vivo isolation and culturing of til with interleukin-2, followed by reinfusion into the patient, is one form of adoptive immunotherapy of cancer. (12 Dec 1998) |
| neoplasms, ductal, lobular, and medullary | Neoplasms, usually carcinoma, located within the centre of an organ or within small lobes, and in the case of the breast, intraductally. The emphasis of the name is on the location of the neoplastic tissue rather than on its histological type. most cancers of this type are located in the breast. (12 Dec 1998) |
| lobular | <anatomy> Pertaining to the part of the breast that is furthest from the nipple, the lobes. (09 Oct 1997) |
| lobular glomerulonephritis | <pathology> A kidney disorder which results in kidney dysfunction. Inflammation of the glomeruli result from an abnormal immune response and the deposition of antibodies within the kidney (glomerulus) ultrastructure. Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis has been divided into two different types in the basis of where the antibodies are deposited in the glomerulus. MPGN type I, the more common type, deposits antibodies in the subendothelial layer of the basement membrane, whereas type II deposits antibodies in the bottom layer of the basement membrane. Symptoms include cloudy urine (pyuria), decreased urine output, swelling and hypertension. This disorder often results in end-stage renal disease. Acronym: MPGN (26 Mar 1998) |
