| CAAT box | <molecular biology> Nucleotide sequence in many eukaryotic promoters usually about 75bp upstream of the start of transcription. Binds NF1. (18 Nov 1997) |
| CAAT box |
(also CAT box) A conserved sequence found within the promoter region of the protein-encoding genes of many eukaryotic organisms. It has the consensus sequence GGCCAATCT; it occurs around 75 bases prior to the transcription initiation site; and it is one of several sites for recognition and binding of regulatory proteins called transcription factors.

| CAAT b. |
a conserved noncoding DNA sequence approximating the consensus sequence 5´-GGCCAATCT-3´; it is located approximately 40 to 110 base pairs upstream from the site of transcription initiation in some eukaryotic genes and serves a promoter function.
