| 설명 | 수태된 후에 가장 빠른 성장을 보이는 시기의 수정된 생식세포의 변환물을 이르는 말로 사람에 있어서는 태생 제 8주까지의 시기를 말한다. 이 시기에는 외관상 다른 포유동물의 배아와 거의 구별이 되지 않으며, 임신 제 8주째가 되어야 비로소 뚜렷해진다. 임신의 극히 초기인 배자기는 각종 장기가 생성되는 시기이며 자칫하면 모르고 지나치기 쉬운데 이 무렵에 심장을 비롯하여 중요한 기관이 형성되므로, 선천기형의 원인이 되는 모체의 바이러스 감염이나 약물복용 등에 세심한 주의를 해야 한다. |

| 설명 | 선천적으로 심장 내의 심방사이중격(interatrial septum)이나 심실사이중격(interventricular septum)이 결손되어 혈류가 정상적으로 흐르지 않는 경우. 정상적인 경우 혈류는 정맥에서 우심방으로 모여 우심실을 거친뒤 폐로 가서 산소를 공급받고 다시 왼심방, 왼심실을 차례로 거쳐 대동맥으로 간다. 하지만, 이 경우는 혈류가 압력이 높은 왼심방이나 왼심실에서 압력이 낮은 우심방이나 우심실로 흐르게 된다. 따라서 동맥피와 정맥피가 섞이게 되고, 환자는 호흡곤란, 성장발육장애, 심잡음 등이 나타나고, 심한 경우 청색증으로 발전하기도 한다. 치료는 수술적으로 이 결손부위를 막아 주어야 한다. |

| 설명 | 재태주수에 관계없이 출생시에서의 신생아 체중. 남녀 모두 약 반수가 3,000~3,500g에 포함된다. 2,500g 이하(빈도 7%)를 미숙아(WHO, 1951년)로 했는데, 1961년 이 조건에 해당하는 아기를 저출생체중아(2,500~1,500g)로 명명하도록 권고하고 있다. 그 밖에 1,500g 미만을 극소미숙아, 1,000g 미만을 초미숙아로 부른다. 4,000g 이상(빈도 3%)를 거대아라고 한다. 재태기간 주수에서의 출생시 평균체중이 2kg 이내인 아기를 영어로 AFD(appropriate for dates)아, 1,5kg 이하를 SED(small for dates)아 또는 LED(light for dates)아, 1,5kg 이상의 것을 LFD(large for dates)아 또는 HFD(heavy for dates)아로 부른다. 현재 LFD, HFD를 사용하도록 WHO가 권고하고 있다. |
