| bartonellosis |
1. infection with organisms of the genus Bartonella. 2. infection by Bartonella bacilliformis, transmitted by sandflies of the genus Phlebotomus, especially P. verrucarum, found only in certain Andean valleys in Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia; besides humans, it also affects dogs and rodents, especially after splenectomy. It occurs in two distinct stages: the first or acute stage is Oroya fever, a highly fatal febrile illness associated with severe hemolytic anemia (Bartonella anemia); the second or chronic stage in humans is verruga peruana, manifested by a benign skin eruption of hemangioma-like macules surrounded by hyperpigmented borders. Called also Carrión's disease and bartonelliasis.
