| woodbury-type | 1. A process in photographic printing, in which a relief pattern in gelatin, which has been hardened after certain operations, is pressed upon a plate of lead or other soft metal. An intaglio impression in thus produced, from which pictures may be directly printed, but by a slower process than in common printing. 2. A print from such a plate. Origin: After the name of the inventor, W. Woodbury. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |

| advanced concepts torus i | <physics> A steady-state toroidal device built primarily for studies of RF heating and RF current drive. Acronym: ACT I (09 Oct 1997) |
| advanced fuels | <radiobiology> There are several elements or isotopes that could be fused together, besides the DT fuel mixture. Many such fuel combinations would have various advantages over DT, but it is generally more difficult to achieve fusion with these advanced fuels than with the DT mix. (09 Oct 1997) |
| advanced life support | Definitive emergency medical care that includes defibrillation, airway management, and use of drugs and medications. Compare: basic life support. (05 Mar 2000) |
| advanced multiple-beam equalization radiography | A variant of scanning equalization radiography using several X-ray beams. (05 Mar 2000) |
| advanced toroidal facility | <physics> A large stellarator device developed at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), but now retired. Acronym: ATF (09 Oct 1997) |
| glycosylation end products, advanced | Products derived from the nonenzymatic reaction of glucose and proteins in vivo that exhibit a yellow-brown pigmentation and an ability to participate in protein-protein cross-linking. These substances are involved in biological processes relating to protein turnover and it is believed that their excessive accumulation contributes to the chronic complications of diabetes mellitus. (12 Dec 1998) |
| integrated advanced information management systems | A concept, developed in 1983 under the aegis of and supported by the national library of medicine under the name of integrated academic information management systems, to provide professionals in academic health sciences centres and health sciences institutions with convenient access to an integrated and comprehensive network of knowledge. It addresses a wide cross-section of users from administrators and faculty to students and clinicians and has applications to planning, clinical and managerial decision-making, teaching, and research. It provides access to various types of clinical, management, educational, etc., databases, as well as to research and bibliographic databases. In august 1992 the name was changed from integrated academic information management systems to integrated advanced information management systems to reflect use beyond the academic milieu. (12 Dec 1998) |
| adrenal imaging | <radiology> Cortex, I-131 iodo-cholesterol, not widely used due to high rad dose and 4-15 day delayed imaging, medulla, search for pheo, MIBG (I-131 meta-iodobenzylguanidine) (12 Dec 1998) |
| adrenal medullary imaging | <investigation, radiology> A nuclear scan that images the adrenal glands after a radioactive tracer is injected into the bloodstream. This test is useful in detecting a pheochromocytoma, particularly if it not within the adrenal gland. (27 Sep 1997) |
| backscattered electron imaging | <microscopy> The production of backscattered electrons from a sample varies directly with the specimen's average atomic number, higher atomic number elements produce more backscattered electrons than lower atomic number ones. Detection of Backscattered Electrons is achieved by using a donut shaped solid state saemiconductor device mounted on the bottom of the objective lens. When Backscattered Electrons strike the detector electron-hole pairs are created which are then counted. This quantity is translated into a pixel intensity and displayed on the CRT, forming the image. By splitting the detector into halves (or quadrants) differences in the signal level on the individual detector segments provide surface topography information. (05 Aug 1998) |
| blood pool imaging | Nuclear medicine study using a radionuclide that is confined to the vascular compartment. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bone: gallium imaging | <radiology> Increased activity in: active osteomyelitis (90% sensitivity: better than Tc-99m MDP), sarcoma, cellulitis, septic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, Paget disease, metastases (65% sensitivity: than for bone agents) see: gallium: indications (12 Dec 1998) |
| bright field imaging | <microscopy> An imaging mode in a transmission electron microscopy that uses only unscattered Electrons to form the image. Contrast in such an image is due entirely to mass-thickness variations in amorphous samples, and may include diffraction contrast in crystalline samples. (05 Aug 1998) |
| cardiac blood pool imaging | This noninvasive test uses radioactive tracers to delineate the hearts chambers and major vessels. It may be used to detect a heart attack, heart muscle function and coronary artery disease. The patient receives a radioactive tracer by injection (into a vein) and then the heart is imaged using a gamma camera. The heart is imaged before and after exercise. This test may be used to detect and evaluate atrial septal defect, dilated cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, Lyme disease (secondary), mitral stenosis and superior vena cava syndrome.
