apache An acronym for acute physiology and chronic health evaluation, a scoring system using routinely collected data and providing an accurate, objective description for a broad range of intensive care unit admissions, measuring severity of illness in critically ill patients. This classification system is composed of two parts: a physiology score representing the degree of acute illness and a preadmission health evaluation indicating health status before acute illness. Development of apache began in 1978 under a 3-year research grant from the u.s. Health care financing administration. Revision and streamlining resulted in apache II. Its 12 routinely measured physiological variables were later amplified to become apache III.
