| spirolactone |
any of a group of compounds bearing 17α-propionic acid as gamma-lactone with 17β-hydroxyl, capable of opposing the action of sodium-retaining steroids on renal transport of sodium and potassium. Three such compounds have been studied. The first contains angular methyl groups at C13 and C10, and is 3-(3-keto-17β-hydroxy-4-androsten-17α-yl)-propionic acid-γ-lactone; the second, without the angular methyl group at C10, is more potent; and the third (spironolactone), with a thioacetyl group at C7, is highly active orally.
