| quadrilateral space | Musculotendinous formation providing passageway for the axillary nerve, posterior humeral circumflex artery and accompanying veins as they run from the axilla to the superior posterior arm; as the neurovascular structures enter the formation anteriorly, it is bounded superiorly by the shoulder joint, medially by the lateral border of subscapularis, laterally by the surgical neck of the humerus, and inferiorly by the tendon of latissimus dorsi; as the vessels exit the formation posteriorly, it is bounded superiorly by the teres minor, medially by the long head of the triceps, laterally by the lateral head of the triceps and inferiorly by the teres major muscle or tendon; as they emerge, most of the neurovascular structures run on the deep surface of the deltoid muscle, which they supply. Synonym: quadrilateral space. (05 Mar 2000) |

| infraglottic space | The part of the cavity of the larynx immediately below the glottis. Synonym: cavitas infraglotticum, aditus glottidis inferior, cavum infraglotticum, inferior laryngeal cavity, infraglottic space. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interalveolar space | The vertical distance between the maxillary and mandibular arches under conditions of vertical dimensions which must be specified, the vertical distance between maxillary and mandibular ridges. Synonym: interalveolar space, interridge distance. (05 Mar 2000) |
| intercostal space | An interval between the ribs, occupied by intercostal muscles, veins, arteries and nerves. Synonym: spatium intercostale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interfascial space | The space between the fascial sheath of the eyeball and the sclera. Synonym: spatium episclerale, interfascial space, spatium interfasciale, spatium intervaginale bulbi oculi, Tenon's space. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interglobular space | One of a number of irregularly branched spaces near the periphery of the dentin of the crown of a tooth, through which pass the ramifications of the tubules; they are caused by failure of calcification of the dentin. Synonym: spatium interglobulare, interglobular space of Owen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interglobular space of Owen | One of a number of irregularly branched spaces near the periphery of the dentin of the crown of a tooth, through which pass the ramifications of the tubules; they are caused by failure of calcification of the dentin. Synonym: spatium interglobulare, interglobular space of Owen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| intermembrane space | <cell biology> Region between the two membranes of mitochondria and chloroplasts. On the endosymbiont hypothesis, this space would represent the original phagosome. (18 Nov 1997) |
| interocclusal rest space | The vertical distance between the opposing occlusal surfaces, assuming rest relation unless otherwise designated. Synonym: interocclusal rest space. Synonym: freeway space. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interpleural space | <anatomy> The space in the thoracic cavity behind the sternum and in between the two pleural sacs (containing the lungs). (27 Sep 1997) |
| interproximal space | The space between adjacent teeth in a dental arch; it is divided into the embrasure occlusal to the contact area, and the septal space gingival to the contact area. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interradicular space | The space between the roots of multirooted teeth. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interseptovalvular space | The interval in the developing embryonic heart between the septum primum and the left valve of the sinus venosus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| intervaginal space of optic nerve | <anatomy, nerve> The spaces within the internal sheath of the optic nerve, between the arachnoidal and pial layers, filled with cerebrospinal fluid and continuous with the subarachnoid space. Synonym: spatia intervaginalia nervi optici, intersheath spaces of optic nerve, Schwalbe's spaces. (05 Mar 2000) |
| intraretinal space | The potential cleft between the pigmented and neural layers of the retina; it represents the cavity of the embryonic optic vesicle; retinal detachment occurs by the opening of this space. (05 Mar 2000) |
