protein kinase [EC 2.7.1.37] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the phosphorylation of serine, threonine, or tyrosine groups in enzymes and other proteins, using ATP as a phosphate donor. Specific protein kinases, usually named for their substrates, regulate by phosphorylation enzymes catalyzing key reactions in processes such as glycogen turnover, cholesterol biosynthesis, and amino acid transformations. Others create the caseins secreted in milk.

protein truncation t. a method for detection of one or more translation termination mutations in a gene that cause a truncated, usually inactive, protein to be synthesized; the appropriate genomic DNA or mRNA is isolated, amplified by polymerase chain reaction, and used as a template for in vitro transcription and translation. The size of the resulting protein is compared to that of a wild type protein by means of SDS–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
