| sulcus lateralis cerebri | The deepest and most prominent of the cortical fissures, extending from the anterior perforated substance first laterally at the deep incisure between the frontal and temporal lobes, then back and slightly upward over the lateral aspect of the cerebral hemisphere, with the superior temporal gyrus as its lower bank, the insula forming its greatly expanded floor. Two short side branches, the ramus anterior and ramus ascendens, divide the inferior frontal gyrus into an orbital part, triangular part, and opercular part. Synonym: sulcus lateralis cerebri, fissura cerebri lateralis, lateral cerebral fissure, sylvian fissure, fissure of Sylvius. (05 Mar 2000) |

| sulcus lateralis posterior | A longitudinal furrow on either side of the posterior median sulcus of the spinal cord marking the line of entrance of the posterior nerve roots. Synonym: sulcus lateralis posterior, posterolateral groove. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sulcus occipitalis lateralis | One of several variable sulci on the lateral aspect of the occipital lobe of each cerebral hemisphere, bounding the lateral occipital convolutions. Synonym: sulcus occipitalis lateralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| onychia lateralis | <dermatology> Inflammation involving the folds of tissue surrounding the nail. Synonym: perionychia. Origin: Gr. Onyx = nail (18 Nov 1997) |
| tractus corticospinalis lateralis | Those fibres of the pyramidal tract that cross to the opposite side in the pyramidal decussation and descend in the dorsal half of the lateral funiculus of the spinal cord; they are distributed throughout the length of the spinal cord to interneurons of the zona intermedia of the spinal gray matter. See: pyramidal tract. Synonym: tractus corticospinalis lateralis, tractus pyramidalis lateralis, crossed pyramidal tract, fasciculus corticospinalis lateralis, fasciculus pyramidalis lateralis, lateral corticospinal tract, lateral pyramidal fasciculus. | facies anterior lateralis corporis humeri | The surface of the humerus lateral to the intertubercular groove. Synonym: facies anterior lateralis corporis humeri, facies anterolateralis corporis humeri. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies lateralis | The surface of a part of the body that faces away from the midline. The NA recognises a lateral surface on the following structures: fibula; ovary; radius; testis; tibia; zygomatic bone. Synonym: facies lateralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
