alveolar part of mandible The portion of the body of the mandible that surrounds and supports the lower teeth.
Synonym: pars alveolaris mandibulae.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar pattern Cloudy to dense opacities, obscuring vascular markings, on chest radiographs.
Synonym: airspace-filling pattern.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar periosteum <anatomy> Fibrous connective tissue surrounding the root of a tooth that separates it from and attaches it to the alveolar bone.
(12 Dec 1998)
alveolar point The most anterior point on the maxillary alveolar process in the midline.
Synonym: alveolar point, prostheon.
Origin: G. Ntr. Of prosthios, foremost
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar process That portion of bone in either the maxilla or the mandible which surrounds and supports the teeth.
(12 Dec 1998)
alveolar proteinosis A very rare disease in which a phospholipid is widely distributed in cells and accumulates in the alveolar spaces in the lung. In some cases the underlying cause is unknown. In others it may relate to an infection or an immune system dysfunction. The net effect is a progressive interference in the ability of the lung (alveoli) to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Symptoms include cough, weight loss, fatigue, shortness of breath and nail abnormalities (clubbing). Chest X-ray may show infiltrates, but a bronchoscopy with trans-tracheal biopsy is necessary to make a tissue diagnosis or alveolar proteinosis. Spontaneous remission may occur in some individuals while complete respiratory failure occurs in others.
(27 Sep 1997)
alveolar ridge That portion of bone in either the maxilla or the mandible which surrounds and supports the teeth.
(12 Dec 1998)
alveolar ridge augmentation Preprosthetic surgery involving rib, cartilage, or iliac crest bone grafts, usually autologous, or synthetic implants for rebuilding the alveolar ridge.
(12 Dec 1998)
alveolar sac Terminal dilation of the alveolar ducts that give rise to alveoli in the lung; a small air chamber in the pulmonary tissue from which the pulmonary alveoli project like bays and into which an alveolar duct opens; in birds, air-containing extensions of bronchi that connect with bone cavities.
Synonym: sacculus alveolaris, air sac.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar septum The tissue intervening between two adjacent pulmonary alveoli; it consists of a close-meshed capillary network covered on both surfaces by very thin alveolar epithelial cells, one of the bony partitions between the tooth sockets.
Synonym: septum interalveolare, alveolar septum, septal bone.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar soft part sarcoma <tumour> A malignant tumour formed of a reticular stroma of connective tissue enclosing aggregates of large round or polygonal cells; occurs in subcutaneous and fibromuscular tissues.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar supporting bone alveolar process
alveolar ventilation The volume of gas expired from the alveoli to the outside of the body per minute; calculated as the respiratory frequency (f) multiplied by the difference between tidal volume and the dead space (VT -VD); units: ml/min BTPS.
(05 Mar 2000)
alveolar yoke One of the eminences on the outer surface of the alveolar process of the maxilla or mandible, formed by the roots of the incisor teeth.
Synonym: alveolar yoke.
(05 Mar 2000)
anterior superior alveolar arteries Origin, infraorbital artery within intraorbital canal; distribution, via anterior alveolar canals to upper incisors and canine teeth, mucus membrane of maxillary sinus.
Synonym: arteriae alveolares superiores anteriores, anterior superior dental arteries.
