| hysterectomy |
Surgical removal of the uterus. If the ovaries are removed during a hysterectomy as well, the women will experience a sudden loss of the hormone estrogen. This abrupt loss of estrogen is also known as "surgical menopause". The estrogen deficiency can cause menopausal symptoms.
