fluorescence The emission of radiation associated with the relaxation of an atom or molecule from an excited energy level to a lower (usually ground state) level. The emission can be in the visible or ultraviolet if an electronic transition is involved, or in the infrared if it is a vibrational transition. See also resonance fluorescence, laser-induced fluorescence, luminescence.

fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). A technique in which a fluorescently labelled DNA probe is used to hybridize with and therefore detect a particular chromosome or gene with the help of fluorescence microscopy.

fluorescence-activated cell sorting A method that allows the separation of cells expressing a specific protein by tagging them with a fluorescent antibody against the molecule of interest. A laser beam excites the fluorescent tag, and the emission of light triggers the cell sorting.
