This word has many meanings in geology, and takes on different attributes in different contexts. In the sense most commonly used in this book, however, it refers to the sum total of all a sedimentary rock's characteristics; its grain-composition, size, shape, sedimentary structures, bedding and matrix. By patiently establishing a rock's facies, geologists can link it with the depositional environment in which it formed.
