bed The part of a machine that is like a bench, supported by the base or legs. The working parts are located on the bed, which in "modern" machines is usually a casting. In older machines the bed is more often mahogany. Interestingly the mahogany bed of a large rose engine has very useful absorbtion characteristics that supress unwanted vibration.
