| atrial fibrillation |
A condition whereby the upper chambers of the heart beat rapidly and chaotically, resulting in an overall rapid and irregular heart beating. This arrhythmia often requires the administration of drugs, such as digitalis, to regulate the overall heart rate. Recent studies have shown that atrial fibrillation can cause a stroke; because of this, an anticoagulant (coumadin) is frequently given as a preventative agent to ward off this complication.

| atrial flutter |
A rapid well-organized contraction of the atrium at a rate of 250-350 contractions per minute. Ventricular beats are usually some multiple of 300. ECG shows saw tooth waves. Atrial flutter is considered a serious and potentially unstable rhythm.

An inherited condition where there is no closure of the foramen ovale at birth, resulting in congenital heart disease. Usually asymptomatic until the third or fourth decades of life.

Hole in the heart...a residual communication between the two upper heart chambers. In most hearts, the flow is from the red side towards the blue (or right) side of the heart. This causes overload of the right heart, but is usually well tolerated. There are several varieties of ASDs depending on the location and associated abnormalities. Repair is by direct suture closure or patch closure.
