The practice of avoiding sexual intercourse outside of legally recognized marriage. Abstinence has a practical value of preventing pregnancy and disease until one is a self-sufficient adult. But it also can be viewed as a cultural imperative to use sex only for procreation and committed family formation and maintenance rather than to express other values that compete with family.
