v. por´tae he´patis [TA] ,  v. porta´lis he´patis  portal vein of liver: a short thick trunk formed by union of the superior mesenteric and the splenic veins behind the neck of the pancreas; it passes upward to the right end of the porta hepatis, where it divides into successively smaller branches, following the branches of the hepatic artery, until it forms a capillary-like system of sinusoids that permeates the entire substance of the liver. Called also hepatic portal vein and portal vein.
