(for the presence of Helicobacter pylori in the stomach): following the oral administration of urea labeled with 13C or 14C, the carbon dioxide in the patient's breath is analyzed to determine the presence of radiolabeled CO2. If H. pylori is present, the action of bacterial urease converts the urea to ammonia and radiolabeled carbon dioxide, which is absorbed into the blood stream and is exhaled by the patient.
