Salmonella Genus of gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae that are responsible for several infections in humans (gastroenteritis and typhoid). If invasive they can cause enteric fevers (e.g. Typhoid, caused by Salmonella typhi), food poisoning (usually Salmonella typhimurium or Salmonella enteridis, the latter notorious for contamination of poultry) and occasionally septicaemia in nonintestinal tissues.
