| UBC proteins | <protein> Family of proteins involved in conjugating ubiquitin to proteins. UBC1, UBC4 and UBC5 have a role in targeting proteins for degradation, but others have more complex roles, including an involvement in cell cycle control (UBC3) and the secretory pathway (UBC6). (18 Nov 1997) |

| kazal proteins | <molecular biology> Family of serine protease inhibitors. Includes seminal acrosin inhibitors, pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI), Bdellin B 3 from leech. (18 Nov 1997) |
| fatty acid binding proteins | <biochemistry> Group of small cytosolic proteins that bind fatty acids or other organic solutes. (18 Nov 1997) |
| unwinding proteins | Enzymes that uncoil the DNA allowing recombination events to occur. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fungal proteins | Proteins found in any species of fungus. (12 Dec 1998) |
| fusion proteins, bcr-abl | Translation products of a fusion mRNA derived from the breakpoint cluster region (bcr) gene and a cellular abl (c-abl) gene translocated to chromosome 22. The p210(bcr-abl) fusion protein is found in patients with chronic myelogenous leukaemia. The p190(bcr-abl) fusion protein is found in patients with acute lymphocytic leukaemia. The activation of human c-abl by chromosomal translocation is essentially the same as the activation of murine c-abl by viral translocation in abelson murine leukaemia virus. (12 Dec 1998) |
| fusion proteins, gag-onc | General name for the translation products of a fusion mRNA consisting of a gag gene and a viral oncogene (v-onc). These products are thought to have the ability to transform cells. (12 Dec 1998) |
| fusion proteins, gag-pol | Polyprotein products of a fused portion of retroviral mRNA containing the gag and pol genes. The polyprotein is synthesised only five percent of the time since pol is out of frame with gag, and is generated by ribosomal frameshifting. (12 Dec 1998) |
| luminescent proteins | Proteins which are involved in the phenomenon of light emission in living systems. Included are the "enzymatic" and "non-enzymatic" types of system with or without the presence of oxygen or co-factors. (12 Dec 1998) |
| acute pulmonary alveolitis | Acute inflammation involving exudate into the pulmonary alveoli and impaired gas exchange; may result in necrosis with haemorrhage into the lungs; occurs in Goodpasture's syndrome, in association with a glomerulonephritis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute pulmonary eosinophilia | <chest medicine> A self-limiting inflammation in the lungs where there is associated infiltration of eosinophils into lung tissue. Chest X-ray reveals pulmonary infiltrates and full blood count shows increased numbers of eosinophils. The cause is unknown and the disease often resolves without treatment. Some forms may be treated with oral corticosteroids. Complications include restrictive cardiomyopathy due to fibrosis of the lining of the heart. (27 Sep 1997) |
| adenomatosis, pulmonary | A neoplastic disease in which the alveoli and distal bronchi are filled with mucus and mucus-secreting columnar epithelial cells. It is characterised by abundant, extremely tenacious sputum, chills, fever, cough, dyspnea, and pleuritic pain. (12 Dec 1998) |
| apical branch of inferior lobar branch of right pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> Branch (of the inferior lobar branch) of the right pulmonary artery serving the apical segment of the inferior lobe of the right lung. Synonym: ramus apicalis lobi inferioris arteriae pulmonalis dextrae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| apicoposterior branch of left superior pulmonary vein | <anatomy, vein> Drains apicoposterior bronchopulmonary segment of superior lobe of left lung. Synonym: ramus apicoposterior venae pulmonalis sinistrae superioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| basal part of pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> See: right pulmonary artery, left pulmonary artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
