a division of bacteria of the kingdom Procaryotae made up of organisms that usually have a cell wall, although it is lacking in muramic acid, and that have other evidences of an earlier phylogenetic origin (based on ribosomal RNA oligonucleotide analysis). These organisms (the Archaeobacteria) include methanogens, strict halophiles, and thermoacidophiles.
