An independent variable which is adjusted to improve the design. All dv in the test problem description should be counted even if the benchmark MDO solution method reduces this number by grouping or increases this number by adding slack variables or target values. Design variables are described as continuous (ie real numbers), discrete (ie chosen from a set of acceptable reals) or integer (ie chosen from a set of integers such as {0,1})
