General term denoting the quantity of radiation or energy that is absorbed by the body. There are several related technical terms with more specific definitions, such as committed dose, effective dose, and dose equivalent. When used for purposes of radiation protection to members of the public, dose is usually expressed with units of sievert (SI-System International) or rem (conventional system).

A level of exposure which is a function of a pollutant's concentration, the length of time a subject is exposed, and the amount of the pollutant that is absorbed. The concentration of the pollutant and the length of time that the subject is exposed to that pollutant determine dose.
