cassette Cassettes are containers filled with magnetically charged tape as a means of holding information. This format has been unpopular in the video game market, but was widely adopted in the audio market and the market for cheap computer hard drive backups. The closest the cassette came to wide recognition as a viable format was during the early planning stages for the NES. The idea was canned as cassettes were believe unpractical, and the NES, as we all know, decided to employ the cartridge format.
