| bracing |
a system of tension and/or compression members connected to the main members of a structure for support. This system transfers wind, dynamic, impact, and vibratory stresses to the substructure and gives rigidity throughout the complete assemblage. Types of bracing include lateral (which resists transverse forces) and longitudinal (which resists longitudinal forces). See also cross frames; diaphragm; sway brace ; and transverse bracing
