arithmetic mean Average. The sum of a series divided by the number of entries in the series. To find the mean answer to a question, add all of the answers and divide by the number of respondents asked that question. Means can be affected by outliers (extreme responses in either direction) since very low responses skew the mean low and very high responses skew the mean high.
