| tendon, achilles | One of the longest tendons in the body, the Achilles tendon (formally called the tendo achilles or the tendo calcaneus) is a tough sinew that attaches the calf muscle to the back of the heel bone (the calcaneus). According to greek mythology, achilles's mother held him as a baby by the heel and dipped him in the river styx to make him invulnerable but the heel by which she held him remained unimmersed and hence vulnerable, as paris' arrow in achilles' heel later proved. | tendon advancement | The excision of the tendon of an eye muscle and attachment of it to a more anterior location on the globe. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tendon bundle | A group of tendon fibres surrounded by a sheath of irregular connective tissue (peritendineum). (05 Mar 2000) |
| tendon cells | Elongated fibroblastic cell's arranged in rows between the collagenous tendon fibres. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tendon graft | A graft of tendon, as in tendon transplantation. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tendon injuries | Injuries to the fibrous cords of connective tissue which attach muscles to bones or other structures. (12 Dec 1998) |
| tendon recession | Surgical displacement of the tendon of an eye muscle posterior to its anatomic insertion. Synonym: curb tenotomy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tendon reflex | A myotatic or deep reflex in which the muscle stretch receptors are stimulated by percussing the tendon of a muscle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tendon suture | Suture of the divided ends of a tendon. Synonym: tendinosuture, tendon suture, tenosuture. Origin: teno-+ G. Rhaphe, suture (05 Mar 2000) |
| tendon transfer | Surgical procedure by which a tendon is incised at its insertion and placed at an anatomical site distant from the original insertion. The tendon remains attached at the point of origin and takes over the function of a muscle inactivated by trauma or disease. (12 Dec 1998) |
| tendon transplantation | Insertion of a slip from the tendon of a sound muscle into the tendon of a paralysed muscle, replacement of a length of tendon by a free graft. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trefoil tendon | A three-lobed fibrous sheet occupying the centre of the diaphragm. Synonym: centrum tendineum diaphragmatis, trefoil tendon. Central tendon of perineum, the fibromuscular mass between the anal canal and the urogenital diaphragm in the median plane; midline episiotomies extend into this structure. Synonym: centrum tendineum perinei, perineal body, Savage's perineal body. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Zinn's tendon | A fibrous ring that surrounds the optic canal and the medial part of the superior orbital fissure; it gives origin to the four rectus muscles of the eye and is partially fused with the sheath of the optic nerve. Synonym: annulus tendineus communis, Zinn's ligament, Zinn's ring, Zinn's tendon. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bursa of extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle | <anatomy> The bursa between the tendon of the extensor carpi radialis brevis and the base of the third metacarpal. Synonym: bursa musculi extensoris carpi radialis brevis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| paradoxical extensor reflex | <clinical sign> Extension of the great toe and abduction of the other toes instead of the normal flexion reflex to plantar stimulation, considered indicative of pyramidal tract involvement ("positive" Babinski). Synonym: Babinski reflex, Babinski's phenomenon, great-toe reflex, paradoxical extensor reflex, toe phenomenon. (05 Mar 2000) |
