| synchronous |
Any type of communication in which the parties communicating are "live" or present in the same space and time. A chat room where both parties must be at their computer, connected to the Internet, and using software to communicate in the chat room protocols is a synchronous method of communication. E-mail is an example of an asynchronous mode of communication where one party can send a note to another person and the recipient need not be online to receive the e-mail.
