ozone Ozone is a colorless gas with a sweet odor. Ozone is not a direct emission from transportation sources. It is a secondary pollutant formed when hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) combine in the presence of sunlight. Ozone is associated with smog or haze conditions.

ozone is found in two places, in the upper atmosphere and at ground level. It is the upper level of ozone that acts as a greenhouse gas -- this ozone occurs naturally. Man-made ozone is found at ground level, and is a byproduct of burning fossil fuels (CO reacts with N 2 O and sunlight to produce O 3 ). Ground level ozone is too short-lived to be a greenhouse gas, but it is a siginificant toxic air pollutant.
