medial epicondyle <anatomy> A bony prominence of the inner aspect of the humerus. The lateral epicondyle provides origin for the muscles which flex the wrist. Inflammation at this site is known as golfer's elbow.
(27 Sep 1997)
medial epicondyle of femur The epicondylus located proximal to the medial condyle.
Synonym: epicondylus medialis ossis femoris, medial femoral tuberosity.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial epicondyle of humerus The epicondylus situated proximal and medial to the condyle.
Synonym: epicondylus medialis humeri, epitrochlea.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial epicondylitis <pathology> Inflammation of the tendons which insert at the medical epicondyle (of the humerus) at the elbow.
Symptoms include pain with forced flexion of the wrist joint.
(27 Sep 1997)
medial femoral circumflex artery <anatomy, artery> Origin, profunda femoris; distribution, hip joint, muscles of thigh; anastomoses, inferior gluteal, superior gluteal, lateral circumflex femoral.
Synonym: arteria circumflexa femoris medialis, medial circumflex artery of thigh, medial femoral circumflex artery.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial femoral tuberosity The epicondylus located proximal to the medial condyle.
Synonym: epicondylus medialis ossis femoris, medial femoral tuberosity.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial fillet A band of white fibres originating from the gracile and cuneate nuclei and decussating in the lower medulla; thence it passes upward through the centre of the medulla oblongata, close to the median raphe; on entering the pons it spreads out laterally to form a flat band ascending over the dorsal border of the pontine nuclei; in the mesencephalon it passes over the dorsal border of the substantia nigra and is displaced laterally by the red nucleus; passing medial to the medial geniculate body, the bundle enters and terminates in the ventral posterior nucleus of the thalamus. Throughout their course, the fibres retain a somatotopic order such that those originating from the gracile nucleus and representing the lower extremity lie lateral to those originating in the cuneate nucleus and representing the arm. The medial lemniscus conveys somatic-sensory information involved in tactile discrimination (two-point discrimination), position sense, and vibration sense.
Synonym: lemniscus medialis, medial fillet, Reil's band, Reil's ribbon.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial forebrain bundle A complex group of fibres arising from the basal olfactory regions, the periamygdaloid region, and the septal nuclei, and passing to the lateral hypothalamus. Some fibres continue into the tegmentum.
(12 Dec 1998)
medial frontobasal artery <anatomy, artery> The medial orbitofrontal branch, the first branch of the pericallosal artery; it supplies the medial half of the inferior surface of the frontal cortex.
Synonym: arteria frontobasalis medialis, ramus orbitofrontalis medialis, orbital artery.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial geniculate body The medial one of a pair of prominent cell groups in the posteroinferior parts of the thalamus; it functions as the last of a series of processing stations along the auditory conduction pathway to the cerebral cortex, receiving the brachium of the inferior colliculus and giving rise to the auditory radiation to the auditory cortex in the superior temporal gyrus.
Synonym: corpus geniculatum mediale, corpus geniculatum internum.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial great muscle <anatomy, muscle> Origin, medial lip of linea aspera; insertion, tibial tuberosity by way of common tendon of quadriceps femoris and ligamentum patellae; action, extends leg; nerve supply, femoral.
Synonym: musculus vastus medialis, medial great muscle, medial vastus muscle, musculus vastus internus.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial head The head of origin closest to the midline. Nomina Anatomica lists medial head of the following: 1) triceps brachii muscle (... Musculi tricipitis brachii ); 2) gastrocnemius muscle (... Musculi gastrocnemii ).
Synonym: caput mediale.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial inferior genicular artery <anatomy, artery> Origin, popliteal; distribution, knee joint; anastomoses, anterior and posterior tibial recurrent and medial superior genicular, i.e., articular vascular network of knee.
Synonym: arteria genus inferior medialis, medial inferior genicular artery.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial inguinal fossa A depression on the peritoneal surface of the anterior abdominal wall between the ridges formed by the inferior epigastric artery and the medial umbilical ligament; it corresponds to the position of the superficial inguinal ring and is the site of a direct inguinal hernia.
Synonym: fossa inguinalis medialis, fovea inguinalis interna.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial lacunar lymph node A lymph node of the external iliac group located medial to the external iliac vein at the vascular lacuna.
Synonym: nodus lacunaris medialis, medial lacunar node.
