Unit: lm/m2 CIE. SI unit of illuminance: llluminance produced on a surface of area 1 square meter by a luminous flux of 1 lumen uniformly distributed over that surface. A non-metric unit is the lumen per square foot lm/ft2 also called the footcandle (fc) equal to 10.764 lx.

The metric unit of measurement indicating the light present on a surface or WorkPlane. One might call Lux the metric FootCandle. It differs in that instead of using a sphere with a radius of one foot it uses one meter. The amount of light falling on one square meter of the sphere is referred to as one Lux.

A unit of illumination equal to the direct illumination on a surface that is everywhere one meter from a uniform point source of one candle intensity or equal to one lumen per square meter. Note: lower LUX value cameras work better in low light. Back to top

This the actual intensity of the light falling on a specified area and is a much better way to describe lighting requirements. Unfortunately, since it depends on the how the light gets from the bulb to the area, it can't be specified by the manufacturer - it has to be measured by the aquarist. Hobbyist luxmeters are available for under $150 and are invaluable for the serious light cognoscente.
