gamete intrafallopian transfer The process whereby gametes (unfertilized eggs plus sperm) are transferred directly into the fallopian tube. When compared with in vitro fertilization, this process often leads to stronger and faster-growing embryos which reach the uterus at the right time and orientation after fertilization.

gamete intrafallopian transfer An assisted reproductive technology that involves surgically removing eggs from a woman's ovary, combining them with sperm, and immediately injecting the eggs/sperm mixture into the fallopian tube. Fertilization then hopefully takes place inside the fallopian tube. One disadvantage of GIFT is the inability to know whether or not fertilization took place if the woman does not become pregnant.
