epidural The two main components of the ordinary epidural are the drugs bupivacaine hydrochloride and fentanyl epinephrine. These drugs are injected in the space around the bag of nerves at the base of the spine (the epidural space) to stop the messages of pain from being sent to the brain, thus eliminating partially or completely the sensation of pain in childbirth.
