a rare chronic form of cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania aethiopica in Ethiopia and Kenya, by L. pifanoi in Venezuela, and by protozoa of the L. viannia and L. mexicana complexes in South and Central America, respectively. It is characterized by the local and hematogenous spread from a primary lesion to produce generalized nodular lesions resembling those of lepromatous leprosy in the skin and sometimes involving the nasal mucosa and laryngopharynx. Individuals with this form of the disease do not develop an effective immune response to the infection. Called also anergic l. and anergic cutaneous l.
