The cellular, outermost extraembryonic membrane, composed of trophoblast lined with mesoderm. It develops villi about two weeks after fertilization. Villi are the threadlike projections growing in tufts on the external surface of the chorion. At three weeks, it is vascularized by allantoic vessels.

The chorion develops chorionic villi, which are finger-like projections on its surface. The chorionic villi extend downward through the uterine lining into the maternal blood supply to help supply the developing embryo with oxygen and nutrients. A CVS test, or chorionic villi sampling, can detect abnormalities in the baby by the removal of tissues from what will be the placenta sometime between the 9 th to 11 th week of pregnancy. ...
