a long piece of wood, loaded in compression, will bend out to one side if enough load is applied. This is a natural reaction to the stiffness, or elasticity, of the wood. When the wood bows outward, the fibers within the wood develop a bending stress in addition to the compression stress, and it takes very little additional load to overstress the wood and cause it to break.
