The bone marrow is the home of blood stem cells, the cells that give rise to the various circulating blood cells. The marrow produces red blood cells, which carry oxygen to our tissues and platelets, small cells critical for proper blood clotting. The marrow also produces white blood cells, of which there are several different kinds. White blood cells are the critical immune cells of the body.
