| arterial segments of kidney | Regions of the kidney supplied by end arteries branching from the renal arteries; they are named anterior inferior segmentum, anterius superior segmentum, inferior segmentum, posterior segmentum, and superior segmentum. | arteries of kidney | The branches of the renal artery that supply the anatomical segments of kidney. Usually five in number, they are end arteries and give off interlobar, arcuate and interlobular arteries in sequence. The latter send afferent arterioles to the glomeruli as well as branches to the kidney capsule. The segmental arteries of the kidney are identified as: anterior inferior (arteriae segmenti anterioris inferioris renis ); anterior superior (arteriae segmenti anterioris superioris renis ); inferior (arteriae segmenti inferioris renis ); posterior (arteriae segmenti posterioris renis ); and superior (arteriae segmenti superioris renis ). | arteriolosclerotic kidney | A kidney in which there is sclerosis of the arterioles, i.e., arteriolar nephrosclerosis resulting from long-standing benign hypertension. Such kidney's tend to be pale red-brown or relatively gray, moderately reduced in size, and firmer than normal organs; the capsular surfaces are uniformly finely granular. Most of the arterioles are thickened and hyalinised, thereby resulting in varying degrees of narrowing of the lumens, ischemia, and fibrosis in the interstitial tissue, leading to uniform contraction of the cortex. | arteriosclerotic kidney | A kidney in which there is sclerosis of arterial vessels larger than arterioles. Such kidney's are usually not significantly reduced in size, but are likely to be paler than usual; the capsular surface may be marked by a few, possibly several, conical, relatively deep V-shaped scars that result from fibrosis and ischemic atrophy of the region supplied by the affected vessel. | artificial kidney | A machine for haemodialysis in acute or chronic renal failure; toxic substances in the blood are removed by exposure to dialyzing fluid across a semipermeable membrane. | cancer, kidney | Cancer of the major organ responsible for the removal from the blood of the toxins of body metabolism the kidney. Childhood kidney cancer is different from the adult kidney cancer. The most common symptom of kidney cancer is blood in the urine. The diagnosis of kidney cancer is supported by findings of the medical history and examination, blood, urine, and X-ray tests, and confirmed with a biopsy.
