enterochromaffin cells whose granules stain readily with chromium and silver salts, located in the basilar portions of the glands of the gastrointestinal tract. Based upon their staining reactions with silver, these cells have been divided into two groups: those that reduce silver without pretreatment (argentaffin c's), and those that require prior exposure to a reducing substance (argyrophilic c's).
