an epidemic, transmissible retroviral disease due to infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which attacks the subset of T lymphocytes known as the CD4 cells or CD4+ T lymphocytes. It is manifested in severe cases as profound depression of cell-mediated immunity, and affects certain recognized risk groups, including homosexual or bisexual males, intravenous drug abusers, hemophiliacs and other blood transfusion recipients, sexual contacts of individuals with HIV infection, and newborn infants of mothers infected with the virus. The criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the diagnosis of AIDS (CDC/AIDS) comprise: the presence of reliably diagnosed disease that is at least moderately indicative of an underlying defect in cell-mediated immunity (e.g., Kaposi sarcoma in an individual less than 60 years of age, or pneumocystis pneumonia or other life-threatening opportunistic infection), occurring in the absence of known causes of underlying immunodeficiency or of any other host defense defects reported to be associated with that disease (e.g., iatrogenic immunosuppression or lymphoreticular malignancies) or the presence of any of the following in an HIV-infected person: a CD4+ T lymphocyte count of less than 200/mL or a CD4+ T lymphocyte percentage of less than 14 per cent, pulmonary tuberculosis, invasive cervical cancer, or recurrent pneumonia.
