any of a class of nucleic acidbinding proteins that also contain one or more zinc-binding domains (tandemly repeated, highly conserved stretches of 28 nucleotides). The class is named for the fingerlike secondary and tertiary structures formed in the zinc-binding regions of the molecules; individual proteins appear to be involved in transcriptional regulation and in RNA transport.
