| RBs | reticulate bodies |
| onion bodies | An obsolete term for epithelial nest. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| tigroid bodies | The material consisting of granular endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes that occurs in nerve cell bodies and dendrites. Synonym: basophil substance, basophilic substance, chromophil substance, Nissl bodies, Nissl granules, substantia basophilia, tigroid bodies, tigroid substance. (05 Mar 2000) |
| elementary bodies | Old term for virions, especially the largest virus particles, visible by light microscopy when stained. Synonym: platelet. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trachoma bodies | Distinctive, complex, intracytoplasmic forms found in the conjunctival epithelial cells of persons in the acute phase of trachoma, less frequently in later stages, varying from 1) discrete acidophilic granules (approximately 250 nm in diameter), to 2) irregular clumps of such material embedded in a basophilic matrix, to 3) relatively large basophilic body's (approximately 700 to 1000 nm in diameter), to 4) large basophilic body's that include discrete, tiny, acidophilic granules. Synonym: Halberstaedter-Prowazek bodies, Prowazek-Greeff bodies. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Trousseau-Lallemand bodies | Old term for small gelatinoid concretions sometimes observed in seminal fluid, old term for Bence Jones cylinders. Synonym: Trousseau-Lallemand bodies. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Jaworski's bodies | Mucous shreds in the gastric contents in hyperchlorhydria. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Joest bodies | <pathology> Intranuclear inclusion body's (Cowdry's type B) produced in certain nerve cells by Borna disease virus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| joint loose bodies | Fibrous, bony, cartilaginous and osteocartilaginous fragments in a synovial joint. Major causes are osteochondritis dissecans, synovial chondromatosis, osteophytes, fractured articular surfaces and damaged menisci. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Jolly bodies | Spherical or ovoid eccentrically located granules, approximately 1 um in diameter, occasionally observed in the stroma of circulating erythrocytes, especially in stained preparations (as compared with wet unstained films); probably represent nuclear remnants, inasmuch as they can be stained with dyes that are rather specific for chromatin; the significance of the body's is not exactly known; they occur most frequently after splenectomy or in megaloblastic or severe haemolytic anaemia. Synonym: Jolly bodies. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ketone bodies | The substances beta-hydroxybutyric acid, acetoacetic acid, and acetone, which are produced by fatty acid and carbohydrate metabolism in the liver in approximately a 78:20:2 ratio. Acetoacetate is produced from acetyl-CoA. most is enzymatically converted to beta-ketobutyrate, but a small amount is spontaneously decarboxylated to acetone. The ketone bodies can be used as fuels by muscle and brain tissue. In starvation and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, large quantities are produced, causing metabolic acidosis and elevated blood and urine levels of all three ketone bodies. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Koch's blue bodies | Schizonts of Theileria parva, the causative agent of East Coast fever; found principally within endothelial cells of the spleen and lymph nodes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Zuckerkandl's bodies | Small masses of chromaffin cells found near the sympathetic ganglia along the abdominal aorta. They serve as chemoreceptors responsive to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen ion concentration, and help to control respiration. (12 Dec 1998) |
| ferruginous bodies | In the lungs, foreign inorganic or organic fibres coated by complexes of haemosiderin and glycoproteins, and believed to be formed by macrophages that have phagocytised the fibres. See: asbestos bodies. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Kurloff's bodies | Palely basophilic, granular inclusions sometimes observed in the cytoplasm of the large mononuclear leukocytes (probably lymphocytes) of guinea pigs and certain other animals. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Lallemand's bodies | Old term for small gelatinoid concretions sometimes observed in seminal fluid, old term for Bence Jones cylinders. Synonym: Trousseau-Lallemand bodies. (05 Mar 2000) |
